What is a search engine?

A Web search engine is an easy tool to search for information on the World Wide Web. The most popular search engine is www.google.com. As you probably know, the search results are presented to you in a list in your browser and are commonly called hits. The information on that list may consist of web pages, images, and other types of files. Some search engines also mine for data available on your website by way of spiders, small information gathering programs that traverse the interne looking for data.

Search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input. The goal of most Search engines is to discover & index all of the content available on the web to provide the best possible search experience to users. You have to manually submit your website to each one however, over time, the spiders will find it on their own. A few things can get you higher ranking on a search engine, Time, Money, Unique name, Cross linking or relevant text vs meta tags It takes could take weeks to show up in one.
