What is a Domain Name?

A Domain Name, part of the Domain Name System (DNS) is what you use to find your way around the Internet. Each and every computer that is on the Internet has a unique address IP address (just like your home address) which is a complicated string of numbers. The "IP address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol").

But it would be hard to remember everyone's individual IP address. The DNS (Domain Name System) makes it easier for you by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the real IP address. So instead of typing 192.32.64.25, you can type www.Iamonlinenow.com. The Domain Name System is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember by converting them into a name you can remember.

When the Domain Name System translates the domain name into the IP address, that is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for any Internet user by way of a browser such as fire fox any place in the world to reach a specific website IP address by entering only its domain name.
